This can include a mastectomy, or top surgery, which is the removal of breast tissue and male chest contouring, which is the construction of a new male chest. Facial masculinization includes procedures such as rhinoplasty, jaw contouring, and adam’s apple creation. And finally, gender-affirming body contouring can help remove excess fat from the hips and thighs. These procedures are performed by our qualified gender-affirming plastic surgeon, board-certified Dr. Krista Genoway.
Transition Into Confidence
For many transgender men, masculinizing operations are life-changing. Not only can they help you look more like your true self, but they can also boost your confidence and help you feel more comfortable in your skin. We want to provide the best experience possible for our patients by ensuring that their surgical needs are met.
Be Comfortable in Your Skin
A good candidate for masculinizing surgeries is someone who feels their appearance does not match their gender identity. This can be due to various reasons, such as feeling like you were born in the wrong body or not feeling comfortable with how you look. If you're considering masculinizing surgeries Surrey plastic surgeon, Dr. Krista Genoway, is an essential ally with whom to consult. Dr. Genoway will help you understand the risks and benefits associated with each procedure and help you make the best decision for your individual needs.
Self-Identification is Your Right!
Body masculinization is a series of common and well-refined operations. Most masculinizing surgeries are conducted on an outpatient basis and do not necessitate a hospital stay. General anesthesia is commonly used to ensure patient safety and comfort. Masculinizing operations on different regions of the body are usually performed concurrently. However, depending on the patient's preferences and recovery time, we may spread out the treatments to allow your body time to recuperate between operations, such as when top surgery (mastectomy), abdominoplasty, and liposuction are all necessary. In addition, there are other ways to time the surgeries, and Dr. Genoway will work with you to develop a safe, individualized, and successful treatment plan for you.
Gender Euphoria
To heal most efficiently, it is vital for you to wear your compression garments for up to six weeks following the procedure. You may have drains that help remove excess bodily fluids. You are advised against any strenuous activity or heavy lifting during this time. Resting as much as possible can help you recover faster, even if you feel inactive. Some bruising and swelling are normal post-surgery. However, there will still be some soreness or discomfort that can often be helped with over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen. Within four to five days of surgery, these symptoms should decrease significantly—although muscle soreness and discoloration might linger between two and eight weeks, depending on your surgery and the various procedures you have performed.
Improvements for Body and Mind
Several studies have shown that undergoing gender-affirming surgery may result in numerous benefits, including improvements to one's general health and sexual functioning. In addition, it has been found that patients treated surgically for gender dysphoria and receiving comprehensive postoperative care report better outcomes than those without this treatment plan. Before you undergo any surgical procedure, it is important that your surgeon work with you and your hormone prescriber (if you take hormones), as these treatments can work synergistically to help give you the masculinization you desire.
You may have soreness for the first few days, especially when moving about or coughing, and discomfort for a week or longer. To alleviate the pain, Dr. Genoway may write a prescription.
Like all surgeries, there are some risks, no matter how rare they may be. For example, male gender reassignment surgery complications can include bleeding, infection, tissue damage, and changes in skin sensation such as persistent pain, tingling, reduced sensation, or numbness. Other complications may include permanent scarring or loss of sexual pleasure and functioning.
Body Masculinization procedures are not covered under MSP however many extended health programs provide some coverage. Dr. Genoway is happy to write to your extended health provider.
